What is an energy certificate?
The energy performance certificate is the legal document that lists your home's energy efficiency rating. It details all the property's energy characteristics, such as insulation, heating and air conditioning appliances, hot water requirements, and more. You'll also find recommendations from the certified technician to help you improve energy efficiency in the future.
The label measures a building's energy efficiency using a seven-letter scale, from A to G*, with A being the most efficient and G the least. To facilitate classification, each letter is assigned a color. The most sustainable buildings have a green tone that intensifies as their rating increases. Conversely, the least efficient buildings have yellow and red colors.
To determine the energy efficiency rating category for each home, two aspects are taken into account:
- Carbon dioxide emissions kgCO2/m2.
- Energy consumption kWh/m2.
Example of energy consumption
Based on the average consumption of Spanish households, located in categories D and E, to find out the energy expenditure of a home, the kWh/m2 of the energy certificate are multiplied by the electricity tariff that is contracted and by the square meters of the home.
In the case of a building, other variables are taken into account such as: climate, year of construction, usable area, facade, height or thermal installations, among others.
Let's look at an example to make the difference clearer. In a 100 square meter home, we'll use an average kWh price of 15 cents as a reference.
In the house with the letter A, energy consumption would be 4,460 kWh and €669. However, in the one with the letter F, energy consumption would be 38,260 kWh and €5,739 per year. This represents a difference of more than €5,000 between the two.
How to obtain the energy efficiency label
It's a very simple process. You need to contact Innovadoras and request a visit to your home. Afterwards, you must register the energy performance certificate with the relevant authority in your autonomous community. If everything is in order, no further action is required.
